Based on a factory structure planning by Dr. Schönheit + Partner (S + P), construction is now beginning on the new, sustainable factory building “bordbar MANUFAKTUR” for the Cologne-based furniture and design company bordbar design GmbH (bordbar) in the west of Cologne.
“With integrated planning, consisting of factory planning, architecture and open space planning, and as the client’s representative and project manager, we create a versatile, changeable and multifunctional building for bordbar from a single source,” says Peter Thomé, Technical Managing Director, S + P Engineering.
bordbar designs and produces aircraft trolleys from original components. The possible applications of these trolleys are diverse: whether for the living area, the kitchen or the (home) office, the trolleys offer storage space exactly where it is needed. This year, bordbar not only celebrated its 15th anniversary – the company also won the coveted design prize “Red Dot Award: Product Design 2021” for its latest trolley _voyager.
With the construction of the “bordbar MANUFAKTUR”, the company is expanding its production and logistics capacities in order to continue to achieve its ambitious goals in the future. There is a lot that is special about the new factory building – especially its sustainable properties for reducing the CO2 footprint in accordance with the EH55 EE efficiency house standard (efficiency house 55 renewable energy class).
“The building’s primary energy demand is 27% lower than would be required for approval under the German Building Energy Act (GEG),” said Jan O. Weisel, Director Project Management, S + P, and responsible for funding consultancy. “Renewable energies cover a share of about 70% of the energy demand required for heating and cooling the building. This, although 55% would also have been sufficient to achieve the EE class. bordbar’s decision to make a significant contribution to achieving climate targets shows the company’s long-term view and sustainable attitude.”
The funding consultancy carried out by S + P gave the building owner a targeted basis for decision-making, including a cost-benefit analysis. The result is now also documented with a positive funding decision from KfW, one of the world’s leading promotional banks. But that’s not all: as a future option, it is planned to cover the energy requirements mainly from renewable energies by using the building’s own photovoltaic system.
“The planning and commissioning of the general contractor Florack is now behind us. At this point, the exciting chapter of realizing our new factory in Cologne begins,” reports Stephan Boltz, Managing Partner, bordbar. “At a time when construction is becoming increasingly challenging, I feel especially well supported by S + P as an integral planner and consultant.”
