Construction of a new plant fire station
Hydro Aluminium Deutschland GmbH, Grevenbroich, Germany
A new fire station with a gross floor area of 3,740 m² was planned for Hydro Aluminium at the Grevenbroich site. The architectural design integrates various 24-hour areas, such as the fire department, plant security, transport control, and medical station, into a functionally and visually cohesive structure. Dr. Schönheit + Partner took on the project planning and coordinated both the architectural design and technical integration. The façade of Hydro Aluminium’s new plant fire station was – logically – also designed with aluminum.
The fire station serves as the central safety and emergency unit for the Grevenbroich site. Several operational functions are to be brought together in the new building to enable synergies and short distances. In addition, the building is to be planned in such a way that a later expansion of the HSE (Health Safety Environment) department is possible without affecting the existing building structure.
The fire station was constructed as a compact reinforced concrete building with an aluminum facade that serves as a continuous shell. A perforated structure creates a uniform external appearance, while strategically placed window openings allow for natural daylight and transparency. The functional arrangement of the units follows a clear zoning concept: the vehicle hall opens toward the plant area, while the plant security unit is positioned with direct access to the plant entrance. Also, the buildings were arranged in a U-shape, which not only ensures efficient organization of processes, but also creates a protected inner courtyard for the fire department. The building technology focuses on sustainability: energy-efficient lighting, optimized ventilation, and the use of sustainable materials.
Hydro Aluminium Deutschland GmbH develops sustainable aluminum products for the automotive, construction, and packaging industries and is part of Norsk Hydro ASA, one of the world's leading providers of aluminum solutions.
