From old to new building in one place
Kettler-Werk / ZEG Zweirad-Einkaufs-Genossenschaft eG, Cologne, Germany
The market for e-bikes is booming. In order to meet the high demand, Dr. Schönheit + Partner supported ZEG from master planning to implementation of the plant expansion at the Cologne site. With its new building and an investment volume of more than 38 million euros, manufacturer Kettler is setting innovative standards in the bicycle industry and is underlining the importance of Germany as a business location.
With the growing market for electric bikes, the new building’s focus is particularly on storage and logistics processes. This is because the storage of the battery cells required for the bikes must meet special requirements. Additionally, a paint shop with a new painting system was to be integrated into the production process for the Kettler plant in Cologne.
The demolition of the old building and the construction of the new building took place in three stages, with the existing building initially serving as a warehouse and logistics center.
The central element of the new location is a spacious marketplace that serves as a hub between incoming goods, outgoing goods, warehouses and production. The building's logistics were planned separately from car traffic to ensure smooth operations and unrestricted functionality of the marketplace.
Visitors and employees are routed via an office wing in front of the building, which is directly adjacent to the production area. The holistic planning from the inside to the outside guaranteed that the functional character of the new building was complemented by a representative appearance. This was the first realization step before the original hall was replaced by two modern high-bay warehouses and the marketplace.
For over 40 years Kettler-Werk GmbH, part of ZEG Zweirad-Einkaufs-Genossenschaft eG, has stood for high-quality bicycles and e-bikes with innovative design and high quality “made in Germany”.
