Innovation Hub: production and research under one roof

Romaco Kilian GmbH, Cologne, Germany

The company, named IMA Kilian GmbH & Co. KG in 2004, commissioned Dr. Schönheit + Partner with the planning and realization of its new company building, the “Kilian Future Plant”. This was built in the zone of the industrial park in the north of Cologne, an area dedicated to specialty chemicals and high-tech production. The future-oriented new facility combines all functional areas from production and logistics to development and administration, on a single site, and is a successful example of a “plant-on-demand”, a demand-driven factory.

Tasks and objectives

The planned company headquarters, located on a 42,000 m² site, was designed to accommodate the company's projected future growth. As a newly constructed headquarters, it will not only feature a process-optimized production hall but also the newly designed KiTech technical center, equipped with state-of-the-art research, laboratory, and training areas. One of the objectives was to provide direct customer access to various areas of expertise, ranging from powder analysis and granulation to compression and final product analysis, offering a representative insight into the company's expertise.

Approach and solutions

Through comprehensive and integrated planning, including factory planning, architecture, and open space planning, Dr. Schönheit + Partner developed a forward-thinking company headquarters in close collaboration with Kilian. “Plant-on-demand” was the keyword for flexibilization and optimization of production: the production output can be flexibly adapted to the demand situation. The new factory combines Germany's locational advantages with significant efficiency and cost benefits.

Its architectural appearance, planned according to our proven concept “from the inside out” and, with an inviting entrance feature, enhances the external perception of the corporate identity. The planning includes halls with a total floor area of 9,000 m² dedicated to the high-tech production of tableting systems. Additionally, 6,000 m² of floor space were allocated for the administration and development area, enabling clear separation while ensuring optimal networking between the various company divisions. Furthermore, the close integration of production and office areas in well thought-out architecture makes a significant contribution to making the day-to-day work of the around 300 employees both efficient and future-oriented.
