Master plan for a future-oriented industrial campus
Hydro Aluminium Deutschland GmbH, Grevenbroich, Germany
Dr. Schönheit + Partner developed an urban master plan for the Hydro Aluminium plant site in Grevenbroich, Germany. The focus was on restructuring the central administration, designing a new canteen, and constructing a modern fire station. Additionally, the site entrance, waste disposal areas, storage spaces, a first aid station, and parking areas were integrated. The planning covered an area of approximately 100,000 m² with an investment volume of €38.6 million.
The master plan focused on a sustainable and future-proof redesign of the site without disrupting existing production and logistics processes. The main challenges included reducing travel times by the central positioning of the canteen, optimization of the traffic infrastructure with a new six-lane plant entrance, and the functional integration of the plant security, fire station, and first aid station into the HSSE Service Center. In addition to plant catering, the canteen was designed to serve as an event and conference center, creating multifunctional synergies.
As part of the master plan, Dr. Schönheit + Partner developed a concept for the reorganization of the site within six months. The new canteen was centrally located to significantly shorten walking distances for the approximately 2,000 employees. The plant security as well as the first aid station were consolidated with the new fire station in a 24/7-operating HSSE Service Center. The plant entrance was expanded to six lanes to optimize traffic flow. In addition, the internal traffic was relieved by a separate access road for the disposal and storage areas. The architectural design of the new buildings features an aluminum façade, serving as a tribute to the company’s product and creating a distinct design identity.
