Master plan for a sustainable factory

A new factory building for bordbar was to be constructed on a 2,700 m² plot in the western part of Cologne. In addition to providing sufficient production and storage space, the new factory building was also designed to be sustainable and meet the Efficiency House Standard EH55 EE (Efficiency House 55 Renewable Energy Class).

With integrated planning consisting of factory planning, architecture, and site development planning, and as the client's representative and project manager, we created a flexible, adaptable, and multifunctional building in close collaboration with bordbar – all from a single source. The initial factory structure planning involved designing an energy-efficient storage and production area with production-related administration (around 1,750 m²). The building was designed to cover around 70% of the primary energy demand for heating and cooling by renewable energy sources. Future technologies such as heat pumps were incorporated. The funding consultancy we conducted provided bordbar with targeted decision-making foundations, including a cost-benefit analysis, and was the basis for obtaining the positive funding approval from KfW Bank. As a future option, the use of an in-house photovoltaic system is planned to cover the building's energy demand with up to 100% renewable energy.

Bordbar designs and manufactures airplane trolleys made from original parts. The possible uses of the trolleys are diverse: whether for the living area, the kitchen, or the (home) office, the trolleys provide flexible storage space. In 2021, bordbar celebrated its 15th company anniversary and won the prestigious design award "Red Dot Award: Product Design 2021" for its _voyager trolley.
