Master Plan Urban Production 2030+
Romaco Kilian GmbH, Cologne, Germany
To ensure the continued existence of industrial sites in urban locations, Dr. Schönheit + Partner developed various master plans under the name “Urban Production 2030+” in collaboration with Romaco Kilian and other companies. These plans were partially implemented on the production sites of the companies in Cologne. Kilian is a prime example of successful implementation.
Many companies wish to maintain their sites in urban areas. Commercial diversity offers enormous advantages for companies, such as direct access to sources of knowledge and creativity in inner-city areas. Employees, in turn, benefit from shorter commutes to work and a higher quality of life.
To be able to continue to produce competitively at their traditional location in the future, companies need to reorganize established structures. For its main site in Cologne, Romaco Kilian opted for a long-term restructuring of their 42,000 m² company headquarters.
Through comprehensive and integrated planning, including factory planning, architecture, and open space planning, Dr. Schönheit + Partner developed a forward-thinking company headquarters in close collaboration with Kilian. “Plant-on-demand” was the keyword for flexibilization and optimization of production: the production output can be flexibly adapted to the demand situation. The new factory combines Germany's locational advantages with significant efficiency and cost benefits.
Its architectural appearance, planned according to our proven concept “from the inside out” and, with an inviting entrance feature, enhances the external perception of the corporate identity. The planning includes halls with a total floor area of 9,000 m² dedicated to the high-tech production of tableting systems. Additionally, 6,000 m² of floor space were allocated for the administration and development area, enabling clear separation while ensuring optimal networking between the various company divisions. Furthermore, the close integration of production and office areas in well thought-out architecture makes a significant contribution to making the day-to-day work of the around 300 employees both efficient and future-oriented.
Romaco Kilian is a leading manufacturer of tablet presses for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and chemical industries. Its portfolio ranges from R&D presses to robust high-performance machines for demanding applications. In 2013, IMA Kilian GmbH & Co. KG was integrated into the Romaco Group, a leading international supplier of machines and integrated system solutions for the development, production and packaging of pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics and chemical products.
