Multifunctional building with warehouse, administration and canteen

STEINERT GmbH, Cologne, Germany

Dr. Schönheit + Partner designed a multifunctional building for the mechanical engineering company STEINERT that combines the central functions of production, logistics, administration and canteen. This was the first step in the implementation of the 2030+ “Urban Production” master plan, which our factory planners and architects developed for the redesign of the entire site.

Tasks and objectives

As a traditional mechanical engineering company in the heart of Cologne, STEINERT faced the challenge of expanding its production capacities amidst a shortage of available space. In order to be able to continue producing competitively at its traditional location in the future, the company needed to reorganize its existing structures. The factory planners and architects from Dr. Schönheit + Partner developed an “Urban Production 2030+” master plan for the gradual restructuring of the historically grown 35,000 m² site.

The new construction of the multifunctional building was part of STEINERT's long-term site strategy and serves to optimize production and logistics processes. The building was to form the basis for a future-proof, efficient production structure by combining assembly, order picking and storage areas with administration-related areas. The planning was conducted on a plot of around 4,060 m² within the existing factory premises.

Approach and solutions

The multifunctional building was planned in close collaboration with STEINERT and takes into account both operational requirements and a uniform architectural language at the site.

The building structure consists of a single-storey production hall and a three-storey perimeter block that accommodates administration, social rooms and technical building equipment. The supporting structure is based on a skeleton construction with bracing cores. The façade aligns with the existing site architecture, combining corrugated sheet metal cladding and precast concrete elements. A steel pedestrian bridge with perforated cladding serves as a connecting element between the company premises on Widdersdorfer Strasse and the future Research & Development Center.

The energy concept combines a heat pump with gas condensing boiler technology; sustainable building materials and modern building technology optimize energy efficiency additionally. A comprehensive sprinkler system ensures fire protection.
