One Campus Master Plan 2030+ for the refinery industry

Deutsche Infineum GmbH & Co. KG,  Cologne, Germany

Deutsche Infineum commissioned Dr. Schönheit + Partner to conduct a structural analysis of its Cologne site with a view to developing the location over the coming years. The result of the “One Campus 2030+ Master Plan” is the centralization of all relevant administrative areas, as well as the plant fire department. The reorganization of the site will ensure the location’s long-term, future-proof alignment.

Tasks and objectives

Infineum intended to systematically assess the existing central and decentralized work areas and reevaluate them based on modern work environments. The goal was to establish the foundations for comprehensive conceptual planning and decisions regarding the location of functional areas, fire department, building sites, expansion areas for new projects, and the handling of external companies.

Dr. Schönheit + Partner proposed to the leadership team to strategically shape the Cologne site for the future within the framework of a Master Plan 2030+, to maintain and enhance Infineum's performance. Initial considerations for the holistic planning took into account accessibility and Infineum's corporate identity.

Approach and solutions

The master plan design began with a comprehensive site analysis that considered the needs of 160 Infineum employees and future growth scenarios. In view of the expanded refinery facility, classic master plan issues relating to traffic routes, building layout, site systematics, and space for new construction projects had to be clarified. At the same time, the need of new programs and intersection-free traffic had to be taken into account.

With the growing workforce, central functions such as the fire department and canteen reached their capacity limits, so that the existing buildings had to be adapted to future requirements. Therefore, the aim was to develop a long-term master plan that focused on central administration and selected functional areas. This also included the integration of facilities such as the fire department, waste disposal areas, external companies, and parking spaces.

Due to space reallocations, Dr. Schönheit + Partner was commissioned in 2024 to update the master plan. This incorporated a vacant office building in the immediate vicinity of the site into the planning for use outside the danger zone for the central administration on Scarletallee in order to reduce investment requirements. The result was a campus for modern working environments: offices, planning, fire department, services, quality, security, control room, and multifunctional rooms such as a canteen and meeting rooms were created.

Client

Infineum is one of the world's leading companies in the development, manufacture, and marketing of additives for fuels and lubricants. The company was founded in 1999 and is a joint venture between two of the biggest names in the fuel and lubricant industry: ExxonMobil and Shell. Its customers include many well-known consumer brands.

When designing our 2030+ master plan, we focused on the future of urban production. The core of the site planning in the north of Cologne is an urban campus in which modern working environments convey an open, collaborative corporate culture to employees, customers and visitors."
