The implementation of TPM makes it possible

To counter steadily rising labor costs combined with ever greater demands for precision, product quality and repeatability in manufacturing, many Central European companies are increasingly turning towards automation for their own machinery. A typical example of an industry confronted with the challenges described above is the medical technology industry. High demands for reliability and quality of the manufactured products require precise and fool-proof production processes, often with a high degree of automation. In such an environment, it is essential to eliminate sudden downtime of the machinery as far as possible and to reduce scheduled downtime to a necessary minimum.

This is possible with the implementation of TPM (Total Productive Maintenance). TPM is a KPI-based system to efficiently handle all technology-relevant components and processes of a company. With the aim of ensuring plant availability and reducing maintenance costs, the TPM system describes efficient processes for handling and preventing malfunctions as well as procedures for sustainable and permanent troubleshooting. As one major advantage TPM can be designed to span across different departments. All employees directly or indirectly involved in operational processes participate in implementing the contents described the TPM concept. If integrated into a production or operational excellence system, TPM draws from the production systems principles and methods and adds a targeted approach regarding the correct handling of the machinery to the overall system. Based on standardized principles, TPM is always adjusted to the individual requirements of the company in question.

Together with a globally operating medical technology company, experts from Dr. Schönheit + Partner have developed an individual TPM concept. This creates the foundation for a successful plant-internal and subsequently multi-plant implementation. The challenge in this case was to tailor the concept to the specific requirements and to integrate it optimally into the already existing production system. For this, the S + P team drew on its wealth of experience from many TPM concepts already developed.

The implementation activities are already proving promising after the first few months. The plan is to roll out the concept initially to all relevant areas at the main site before subsequently transferring it to all other sites.
