HGK Group pushes ahead with development of integrated industrial and logistics site in the north of Cologne
In November 2020, HGK AG had purchased a 17-hectare site from the City of Cologne in the immediate vicinity of its own terminal for combined transport (KV Terminal North). In awarding the contract to HGK, a company of the Stadtwerke Köln Group, the Cologne City Council was committed to ensuring that one of the last areas designated for industrial settlements would not only be used for transshipment, but also for value creation and jobs. With this objective in mind, HGK has drawn up a master plan that could also be extended to adjacent undeveloped areas.
City Strategy 2030+ as a point of orientation
“We want to enable an optimal interplay of urban production and logistics on the site. Digital tools, forward-looking mobility and a modern working environment play a prominent role. In doing so, we are closely aligned with the guiding themes of the Urban Strategy 2030+”, explains Uwe Wedig, Chairman of the Executive Board of HGK AG. “Based on the direct connection to the KV terminal, we can guarantee an optimal interlocking of production and specific services thanks to our logistics expertise. In this quarter, however, partial areas are also to be offered for research and development, laboratories and start-ups in order to create the highest possible and sustainable workplace quality,” says Uwe Wedig, giving initial insights into the starting points of the master plan.
Sustainability through networking and high ecological standards
The central link in the development is ecological sustainability: By using decentralized, renewable energy sources in combination with specifications for energy-efficient construction, the foundations are to be laid from the outset for climate-neutral operation of the site by 2035. This also includes optimal use of resources and space, for example through shared infrastructure and services. Cooperation with other municipal companies is also conceivable. Support is being provided by the renowned Cologne-based engineering firm Dr. Schönheit + Partner. The internationally active planning and consulting firm specializes in the development of master plans and particularly efficient and sustainable processes and buildings for production and logistics.
HGK is currently working intensively on concretizing the project with the aim of establishing a project company that is to start marketing the site by the end of the year.
